DENUCLEARIZATION OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA
 

Draft Resolution Submitted by the Korean Delegation

 
   

THE SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ASIA PACIFIC PARLIAMENTARY FORUM

 

Reconfirming that the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula through the resolution of the North Korea nuclear issue is a goal that we must achieve for nuclear nonproliferation not just in Northeast Asia but also in the entire world;

 

Taking note of the “Resolution on the Situation of the Korean Peninsula” and the “Joint Declaration,” which were adopted in the 16th Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum in January, 2008;

 

Recognizing the importance of the development of inter-Korea relations based on co-existence and co-prosperity through dialogue in the process of discussing the denuclearization of the Peninsula;

 

Reconfirming the significance of the complete implementation of the Joint Statement adopted on September 19, 2005;

 

Encouraging parties to the 6-Party talks to be seriously engaged in follow-up negotiations based upon the spirit of mutual respect and equality in order to achieve the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula;

 

Resolves to:

 

1.      Reaffirm that the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula is key to the peace and security of the world,

 

2.      Reconfirm that efforts for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula should be continued through the framework of the 6-Party talks;

 

3.      Urge the parties to the 6-Party talks to promptly implement the “2nd phase actions for the implementation of the September 19th Joint Statement,” which were agreed upon in October, 2007, including the verification protocol, to enter the phase of complete dismantlement of North Korea’s nuclear programs;

 

4.      Urge the parties to the 6-Party talks to strive for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula by resolving the North Korea nuclear issue in accordance with the confidence-based principle of “Commitment for Commitment” and “Action for Action.”
